You stepped on the scale, saw a 2kg jump, and panicked. You didn't gain 2kg of fat — you can't. Here's what the number actually measures, and why "fast weight loss" is almost never what you think it is.
Picture it: you ate normally, slept fine, and this morning the scale is up 2kg. You didn't eat 15,400 extra calories yesterday — that would take roughly a week of serious overeating. So where did the 2kg come from?
It didn't come from fat. Fat is energy-dense and it changes slowly. Water, glycogen, and the food still in your gut change fast — and together they are the bulk of how your weight swings day to day. One kilogram of body fat is roughly 7,700 kcal. To add 2kg of real fat in a single day you'd need to overeat by about 15,400 kcal. Almost no one does that. Yet the number moves all the time. That's your proof: the scale is measuring water far more often than it's measuring fat.
Your body weight is not one thing. It is a sum of several things — and only one of them is fat.

Add all that up and a normal person's weight can legitimately swing 2kg within a single week with no change in fat at all. Water is the biggest and fastest mover. That's why a single weigh-in is close to meaningless — it's mostly measuring how hydrated you are, not how much fat you've lost.

So the moment you see "5kg in 2 weeks," be suspicious. That kind of rate is physically impossible as pure fat. In a week, the fastest a person can realistically lose are a few hundred grams of actual fat. Most of a fast first-week drop is water and glycogen. The scale celebrates; your body fat barely moved.

Now look at what a "5kg in 2 weeks" crash diet really does. To lose 5kg of fat in 14 days you'd need a deficit of about 2,750 kcal/day — more than many people eat in a day, and far below what most bodies tolerate. So where does the weight come from? Water, glycogen, and muscle. The scale drops fast and hard because those are the easiest things to shed. The fat is barely a fraction of it.
Real fat loss is slow by design. A sensible deficit of 300–500 kcal/day produces roughly 0.3–0.5kg of true fat per week. Anything faster is mostly not fat — and some of it is muscle you'll wish you'd kept.
The scale can be moving down while you're getting weaker — because you're losing the wrong thing.
When you cut calories hard without strength training, your body doesn't only burn fat. It can burn muscle too. Reviews of weight-loss composition have long shown that a meaningful share of diet-induced weight lost is fat-free mass — and in poorly-designed dieting it can climb as high as 25–30% of everything you lose.

This is the single most important reason to stop trusting the scale as a judge. The scale has no way to tell you whether the weight you lost was fat or muscle. It just reports a total. Two people can lose the exact same number: one keeps their muscle and gets leaner, the other drops muscle and gets weaker. Same scale reading, completely different outcomes.
You protect muscle two ways: keep protein high (protein-first, around 2.0–2.1g per kg) and lift weights (strength training sends the "keep the muscle" signal). Do that, and the fat you lose stays lost — and the scale stops being your enemy.
The truth is liberating: the scale isn't a reliable fat-loss tool, so you can stop panicking over a daily number. You manage what you measure — so measure fat, not weight.
