Stop Weighing Yourself. Start Measuring Fat.
You manage what you measure. If you're only watching the number on the scale, you're measuring the wrong thing — and it's quietly steering your whole diet in the wrong direction.
Scale weight is a crude, noisy proxy for what you actually want: the fat. Fat is just one of five things in the number you read every morning. The rest — water, glycogen, muscle, and whatever is still in your gut — swings around day to day and has almost nothing to do with whether you're getting leaner. So if you keep making decisions off that number, you're making decisions off noise.
This page is the fix. It's a hierarchy of measurement tools, ranked by how much they actually tell you about fat. Use more accurate tools when you can, and use the unreliable ones the right way when you can't.
The Measurement Hierarchy
Not all measurements are equal. Here's how they stack up, from best to worst:

DEXA: the gold standard
A DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan is the most accurate common way to measure body fat. It separates fat from lean mass and bone, and it's the reference most research and clinical tools are validated against. The trade-off is cost and access: expect roughly $50–$100, and you need a clinic, gym, or imaging centre that has one. If you can get two scans the same way over time, it's the cleanest before-and-after snapshot you'll own.
Calipers + tape: consistent and cheap
Skinfold calipers measure the fat thickness under your skin at set sites, and a tape measure tracks your waist and hips. Done the same way each time, this is a genuinely good, near-free way to see direction. The secret is consistency, not precision — same sites, same tool, same time, same person.
Home body-fat scales: trends only
Home scales use bioelectrical impedance — they send a weak current through your body and estimate fat from how it's conducted. The problem: your hydration level changes the signal. Dehydrated, and the scale reports a lower body-fat guess; bloated, and it jumps. Embedded software then "smooths" the numbers, which makes a single reading look more meaningful than it is. Use it, but only to watch the direction over weeks, never to judge a single morning.
The Weekly-Average Rule
Here's the routine that filters the noise out of a regular scale or body-fat scale. Weigh daily under the same conditions — same time, same bathroom, after you've been to the toilet, before food. Then don't look at any single day. Instead, average the seven days into one weekly number, and compare those weekly averages. One bad day is not a gain. A high week is not a setback. Look at the 4-week trend — that's where the signal lives.
This is why the "I gained 1kg overnight" panic is fake. That kg is water, glycogen, and undigested food from yesterday — it is not fat. Fat simply cannot appear that fast. The scale never lies, exactly — it just measures everything, all at once, and most of it isn't fat.
Waist Circumference: A Proxy That Matters
Not all fat is the same. Visceral fat — the deep, internal fat packed around your organs, driving the "belly" shape — is the more health-relevant fat, strongly linked to metabolic risk. Subcutaneous fat, the pinchable fat under your skin, is less dangerous. A scale can't tell them apart. Your waist circumference can.
So measure the things that actually track health and shape:
- Waist — at the narrowest point, or around the navel, same spot each time. The main visceral-fat proxy.
- Hips — at the widest point of the glutes. Together with waist it gives you a waist-to-hip ratio.
- Thigh — useful for tracking body recomposition, where muscle may grow as fat shrinks.
Add photos once a month — front, side, back, in the same lighting and posture. It's the most honest non-numeric record of change, because it's unaffected by water swings.
Gym Scales vs Home Scales: Same Person, Different Number
Here's a real trap. You step on the InBody machine at the gym and it says 22% body fat. You go home, stand on your own scale, and it tells you 27%. Same person, same morning, wildly different numbers. This is normal — different devices, different algorithms, different reference populations, different hydration states. The InBody uses its own set of equations, your home scale uses another.
The rule that saves you: always use the same machine, at the same time, under the same conditions. Never mix devices, and never compare a gym reading to a home reading. One device, one calendar, trend over months — that's a measurement you can actually act on.
The Bottom Line
Pick one consistent method and stick to it. If you can afford it, a DEXA once or twice gives you a true baseline and a clean end-point. In between, calipers, a tape measure, and a monthly photo cost almost nothing and tell you the truth. Weigh daily and average weekly if you need structure — but never let a single number set your mood or your meal plan. Measure fat, not weight, and the noise stops running your life.
