The best tracking is boring and consistent. Do these four things: eat broadly the same foods day to day, so your intake is a known quantity; weigh daily but look at the weekly average, because a single day reflects water and gut content, not fat; adjust about once a month rather than reacting to every bad day, so the change is real and not noise; and measure your waist and photos so you capture fat loss even when the scale stalls.
This turns tracking into a feedback loop instead of a chore. If the four-week trend is moving the right way, don't change anything. If it's flat for a month, tighten the deficit slightly. Rule-based and patient — that's the approach that survives. Obsessive daily counting is fragile; a few clear rules are not.
